The sun bear is the world’s smallest bear, found in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. Named for the golden crescent on its chest, it’s rarely seen—but increasingly threatened. Widespread deforestation, poaching, and the illegal pet trade are pushing sun bears toward extinction.

Blackie, a sun bear at the Honolulu Zoo, serves as an ambassador for his species, helping share the conservation story with every visitor who comes to learn about him.
