Camp Instructor

  • Employment Status: Seasonal, Full-time
  • Reports to: Director of Education or Education Coordinator
  • Salary: $15.00 – $16.00 Depending on experience level
  • Mandatory Training Dates: Fall: October 2(Monday), October 3(Tuesday), Winter: Dec 18(Monday), Dec 19(Tuesday)
  • Camp Dates: Fall: October 9-13, Winter: Dec 26-29, January 2-5)
  • Shifts: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm OR 9:30am-6pm (includes 30-minute lunch break)

The Honolulu Zoo Society’s Education Department offers day camps during the spring, summer, fall, and winter, as well as additional programs throughout the year on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Camps run 8:00am to 2:30pm, with optional aftercare available with pick-up times at 4:00pm and 5:30pm.

During the mandatory training dates, instructors will be provided with the curriculum and safety instructions for zoo conduct to familiarize themselves.

Instructors will lead each camp under the supervision of the Director of

Education and Education Coordinator.

  • Lead educational lessons pertaining to the natural sciences and wildlife
  • Conduct Zoo tours, animal encounters, science projects, games, and other activities
  • Maintain a safe and encouraging environment for all participants and staff
  • Assist in all aspects of program preparation, such as set up, maintenance, and inventory program supplies
  • Mentor Junior (Teen) Volunteers and provide guidance when needed
  • Assist with aftercare for all age groups
  • Any other duties assigned
  • Seeking candidates with a degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, Environmental Studies, or affiliated science

– OR –

  • Experience working with children in camps, youth programs, recreation, or a related field
  • Individuals in the process of obtaining a degree in one of the above-mentioned disciplines will also be considered
  • Ability to learn and educate children on information about the animals and habitats at the Honolulu Zoo
  • Must be able to work collaboratively with others to develop and deliver program content
  • Experience leading, or supervising, groups of various sizes and ages, particularly children ages 5 to 11
  • Must be comfortable communicating with staff
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time
  • Interest in wildlife and environmental conservation
  • Teaching background in science education or animal sciences
  • Experience working with children
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Successfully complete a state and federal background check
  • HZS requests all new hires to complete a pre-employment drug test
