One hour after birth Japan is cradling baby Emma.  She was born after a gestation period of 7 to 8 months.

Gibbons usually produce only a single offspring.  Her big brother Micah,  who was born in February 1999,  will be introduced to her later in the day.

Emma will nurse from her mother until she is a little over a  year old.  This is the 4th time that Japan has given birth at the Honolulu Zoo.  7 hours after birth, Emma is shown here exhibiting the natural behavior of holding tightly on to mom.  The day after she was born she went out on exhibit with her family, to the delight of visitors.
