Gharials Move to New Exhibit

On October 30, 2003 our three female gharials were moved to their new exhibit. Due to the fragile jaws and sharp teeth extreme care was taken to avoid injury to the gharials and the staff involved in the move.

A net was used to subdue them ... but then it needed to be removed.
Transferring to a stretcher was a little tricky. The nose was wrapped in a towel and the legs were tied.
Each gharial was weighed and ... physically examined to determine their gender.
Blood samples were taken by the Zoo veterinarian. Then, they were loaded on the back of a pickup truck.
Once in their new exhibit they needed to be untied and unwrapped. The staff needed to clear the area quickly once they were released.
The gharials first instinct was to try to escape. Eventually, life was back to normal.
